How Does One Progress in Tae Kwon Do?

Simply by coming into the instruction of Tae Kwon Do, one has attained the level of white belt. It symbolizes "a beginning", which is an accomplishment on its own since a decision has been made to reach a goal. There are several levels before one can attain the highest achievement of black belt. By attending one to two classes a week, a person begins to learn the art of Tae Kwon Do. When assessed to be ready for promotion to the next level, the individual at their appropriate level is assessed for skills in the four areas of training. These areas are:

  • Poomse (patterns of movement)
  • Sparring (self-defense)
  • Demonstration of strength (e.g. breaking a board)
  • Knowledge Test (e.g. terminologies)
